Тоннель БАРТа под заливом Сан-Франциско [ San Francisco Bay] соединяет Сан-Франциско с Оклендом. Строительство началось в 60-е гг., а первые участки открылись в 1972. К середине 80-х гг. БАРТ стал функционировать в полную силу - пассажироперевозки превышают 200 тыс. человек в день, и метрополитен имеет репутацию одного из самых современных и комфортабельных в стране. В настоящее время действуют 4 линии (с параллельными участками) в виде буквы "Х".
